Default "TS3 apple ducking contest" project
Hello !

This thread is about making the "apple bobbing contest" object from TS3 for TS2.

I open this thread because :
- I saw on the forum thread "Hacks & CC that you'd like to see!" that a lot of people wanted that object and was willing to discuss it
- I want it too and I'm ok to try to do it
- I hope people will keep on helping by providing advices on this thread (not the other one that is not made for this purpose) or by joining the team (there's only me in the team for now )

I believe in the "Thanks" button and its amazing powers !!!

I gathered there all the discussions about this object.

If I can't get that, do you think someone could adapt the toilet into something that would approximate one?

Apple bobbing is an old-fashioned game, not seen much in this form anymore, involving a large tub (traditionally a washtub normally used for doing laundry by hand) which has been filled with water, with several apples set afloat in it. Players kneel beside the tub with their hands behind their backs (possibly tied there to ensure compliance with the rule) and compete to seize an apple in their mouths. This is a difficult and hilariously splashy feat, and anyone who succeeds gets bragging rights as well as the apple.

An alternative to this method is to tie apples to long strings, suspended from a line (a clothesline will do; these games are generally played outdoors or in large spaces like barns and church fellowship halls) and agitate the line as the standing players attempt, again, to catch them in their teeth. This is marginally less difficult, and a lot less messy, but a lot more likely to result in players getting smacked hard in the face, bruising the apple and possibly the player.

Apple bobbing is called apple "ducking" where I live in Scotland (and probably in England too). It's one of the traditional things done at Halloween before the massive commercialisation of that feast in recent years. I've never seen the version with the apples on strings, but we used to do it at home in an old-fashioned wash tub or baby bath. I wish my Sims could do it too. At school the teachers thought up a more hygienic version for us, where we held forks in our mouths and tried to drop them onto the floating apples to spear them.

Thanks @Peni Griffin, I can see it now ! I've played that game when I was a child (but didn't know the name in english) and @AndrewGloria made me quite nostalgic. It woul be great to have it inTS2 !
I just thought about something for the sim animation and the moding (the first version of the game only), but I can't mesh a low bucket of floating apples, unfortunately ...

The apples doesn't move : it won't be as realist as in the TS3 object. It could work even so, if it's not too hight : in fact, the animation I have in mind is the one used to "smell flower", so it's quite near the floor ...
Then you could add an overlay to "tie the hand" in the back (I can't do that but I think Iknow some objects that use one). I think you can use the apple from season to catch with the mouth but I'm not sure.

I just now realize that the more difficult will be to put an accessory apple in the mouth of the sims : I never succeed in dealing with picking accesories.... But it's worth trying at least, hoping that no other difficulty will come out ....

It would be much better with real apples that could be put in water ...

I'll see what I can do (about the mod, not the mesh, I'm not a mesher), but not this month : I'm quite busy with other projects. I won't refuse if someone would like to give me a hand on that one, however ...

Sun&Moon have pickable apples, they cloned the apple from the pizza slice. Those apples on an OMPS placed into a barrel combined with some kind of animation could look okay. http://www.medievalsims.com/forums/...hp?f=240&t=7924

Did you see my link to Sun&Moon Apple tress with apples your sim can hold and eat? I'm not sure if it would help you with this or not.

Edit: Yes you did, your post simply wasn't showing up before. I'm interested in any type of fair ground game. I just installed a PCsims ones where sims knock over cans. I think it's using the dart board animation. I'm afraid I know zero about modding otherwise I would help out. I can play test things though.

Yes, I've seen your post. I don't know if it will help however, I'm going to download the whole thing and see.

I just remembered. When I wanted the cat shelves from TS3 someone directed me here. http://crispsandkerosene.tumblr.com/ She does TS3 to TS2 conversions and she did the shelves for me. You could always ask her to convert the TS3 mesh for the apple bobbing.

Thanks for the link because all the other propositions won't be as good and practical as the TS3 thing itself. She did it for you even though she didn't know you ?

Hey, CrispsandKerosene here (this is an old account predating the creation of my tumblr).

I could always convert the TS3 apple tub as a decorative object, but I don't know about animating it. It doesn't have either the water or the apples in when you look at it in TSRWorkshop.

I'm http://crispsandkerosene.tumblr.com/ on tumblr, admittedly not very active on MTS.

Wa ! Thanks for your answer and for willing to do it ! I wasn't sure you would. It's unfortunate that you can't animate it but it's better than nothing. I'll see what I can do about this (perhaps it's an effect ?). Or perhaps when it will be done without the animated apples, someone will see it and animate it for us ? I'm so excited !!!
Thanks again ! :lovestruc

I decided to clone a bathtub to see if I could use the water effect from there. I might also try to add the floating apples, but I can't guarantee anything.

Thanks !!! I'm eager to see it !
Now it's mandatory for me to begin the modding part ! (I will feel culpability otherwise ...)

Good news, the bath water effect works! I'm now trying to get the apples to move.

Here is what it looks like for now (which a sim in :P) :

Great !!! It already looks very gound !

For me, it's not to good : the animation I had in mind (a2o-flowers-smell-bloomingFlowers) is not compatible because the sim end it by sitting up (so it can't be looped !).

For the apples, I was fummbling in TS2 datas and i found those animations from Bon Voyage :
o2a-logRolling-fall1
o2a-logRolling-fall1-alt
o2a-logRolling-fall2
o2a-logRolling-fall2-alt
o2a-logRolling-fall3
o2a-logRolling-fall3-alt
o2a-logRolling-fall4
o2a-logRolling-fall4-alt
o2a-logRolling-roll1
o2a-logRolling-roll1-alt
o2a-logRolling-roll2
o2a-logRolling-roll2-alt
o2a-logRolling-roll3
o2a-logRolling-roll3-alt
o2a-logRolling-roll4

Perhaps it will help you ?

Sadly, I'm not having much success in animating the apples I tried making a custom animation following this tutorial, but it will not play. It's not the first time I have trouble with that though, and I wonder if there might not be something weird with my milkshape. Perhaps I can upload the files and someone else can try to do it?

You have already done a lot, thanks.
If you post your work, we (me of course, and perhaps some anonymous samaritans) will try to get throught it.
In the modding part, I'm so far to succeed ... you've done a better job than me.

Could the animations from bathing a toddler or dog somehow be used?

It's so simple that it might work : I hadn't thought about those !

And @Azelanne, thanks for the download.
I've looked a little into it : is it normal that the apples don't appear IN the bath and don't have texture in SimPE ?
However, once in game, the apples appear in the right place !

Perhaps, if we switch between the 2 subsets of apples (foodqualityapple), it could seem to float in water ?

The problem is that the hands would go into the water when hands are meant to be behind the sims back, but perhaps the first part where the sim knells down in front of the tub could be used and then another animation after that. I am no modder so i have no idea if animations can be stopped or combined like that. Another squat animation happens at the bookcase.

C&K I love the look of your tub with the apples.

I'm a not a master in modding (at all) but I know it's possible to use overlay animations for a part of the body. It's what I will try to do (I said "try" : I'm quite aventurous but I'm not used to deal with animations).

@Azelanne, I know much things about slots but I have a question about your converted object : are the apples on the same slot of the other parts of the object ? If yes, which slot ?

The apples' texture is slaved to the Maxis apple, that's why they have no textures in SimPE. They appear at a weird location there as well because I've moved the bones they are attached to (half of them to the right knob, and the others to the left). I haven't done anything with slots.

For the "hands tied behind back" animation, I think there's one used when a teen sim gets brought back from sneaking out by the police.

Ok. I don't really understand a thing (apart for the repository thing), so I'll let the apple be for now and concentrate on the sim interaction.

I thought about that animation but I couldn't find it in base game. But I was seaching in adult anims ...
Otherwise I've found a CC animation with hand on the back of the head. I'll compare them.
Now I'm testing the different testing animation box that I've made : with some overlays, it could change a lot.

Edit : Finally, I couldn't find the maxis arms overlay animation.
But I've made it somehow with custom animations from Tsukiko (hands on head) and schizophreniastudios (inclination of the spine). Here is the result : it's just a try but I would like to share. And perhaps you'll say it's totally weird...
See on youtube : https://youtu.be/yvCthJgpLj8

I won't be able to do much for a month, because my holidays are almost finished. I wanted to put the download but when I added the animation in, it just broke. For now, the animations are still in my testing box and I need a sleep but I'll see what I can do before the end of holidays.

I double post because it is a question for in case some skilled people reads this :
1 - Is it possible to animate only a subset of a mesh ? And make it in SimPE only ? (making the apples go up and down)
2 - How do you modify a little an already made animation in SimPE ? (like inclinate a little the head of the sim but keep all the rest of the animation)

It will help keeping the project going ... and perhaps finishing it.
